About the Role We are looking for a Canadian Tax Specialist to manage federal and provincial tax compliance for a diverse portfolio of incorporated owner-managed businesses, individuals, and corporations. You will be responsible for the end-to-end preparation and review of Canadian tax returns, identifying tax planning opportunities, and ensuring our clients remain compliant with CRA requirements while their tax position is optimized at every stage.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review T1, T2, T3, and T5 returns across a portfolio of individual, corporate, and trust clients
- Compute and manage instalment payment schedules and ensure timely CRA remittances
- Review financial records including income statements and supporting documentation to ensure accurate tax reporting
- Identify tax planning opportunities including owner compensation structuring, capital gains planning, LCGE eligibility, and corporate reorganizations
- Research and apply relevant CRA guidance, Income Tax Act provisions, and provincial tax legislation
- Prepare and review HST/GST returns and ensure compliance with filing obligations across applicable provinces
- Manage and maintain client tax files and documentation to CRA audit-ready standards
- Draft client correspondence including CRA responses, adjustment requests, and planning memos
- Communicate proactively with the accounting and advisory team to meet deadlines and align on client expectations
- Stay current on federal and provincial tax changes, CRA administrative positions, and relevant case law
- Identify opportunities to expand client relationships through additional tax and advisory services where appropriate
Qualifications
- CPA designation or actively pursuing CPA certification in Canada
- 2 to 4 years of experience in Canadian public accounting with a focus on taxation
- Strong working knowledge of T1, T2, and corporate tax preparation
- Solid understanding of the Income Tax Act and CRA compliance requirements
- Experience with HST/GST filing across multiple provinces is an asset
- Familiarity with tax planning concepts including CCPC status, small business deduction, capital dividend account, and lifetime capital gains exemption
- Proficiency in Taxprep, TaxCycle, Cantax, or equivalent Canadian tax software
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple client files and competing deadlines
